Günther carried two 20l milk canisters filled with petrol and poured them over himself before the altar while 300 people were attending mass. He then spread his arms and let the candles ignite his robe. Two more spare canisters exploded as the floor around the altar was covered in flames.

His birth mother was an unmarried Scanian maid named Josefine Bernhardine Nilsson and he was put up for adoption by his birth father Jens Christian Torp, a married Danish farmer living in Sweden who was his mother's employer.
