Thurmond and Holmes had kidnapped and killed Brooke Hart on 9 November but continued to send ransom notes to his family, owners of Harts Department Store. Governor James 'Sunny Jim' Rolph praised the action, stating that California had sent a message to future kidnappers and promised to pardon anyone involved in the lynching.

Rolling Stone Brian Lewis Hopkins Jones drowns in his swimming pool under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the age of 27 in Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, Sussex, United Kingdom. Jones' body was embalmed, his hair bleached white, placed in an air-tight metal casket and buried 3m deep in Cheltenham Cemetery to prevent exhumation by trophy hunters.
