General of the Italian carabinieri Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiese is shot dead with his 32-year-old bride of less than two months, Emanuela Setti Carraro and his police bodyguard, Domenico Russo by the Mafia at the age of 60 in Via Carini, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy. The murder was ordered by Mafia boss Salvatore Riina. The lead killer was Giuseppe Greco, who was later convicted in absentia of the crime at the Maxi Trial. A number of other gunmen were involved, including 21-year-old Giuseppe Lucchese, who was also convicted of the crime at the Maxi Trial. Riina and various other Mafia bosses, such as Benedetto Santapaola, were subsequently convicted for ordering the killing. |
