Kappler was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His wife and qualified nurse Anneliese carried him out in a large suitcase (he weighed about 47 kg at the time) and drove him straight to Germany in a red Fiat automobile. Six months after his escape Kappler died at home.

Ernest Miller is throatcut, mutilated and cut to pieces by serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer aka The Milwaukee Cannibal at the age of 23 in Oxford Apartments #213, 924 25th North Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States.

Dahmer stored Miller's entire skeleton in the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet and his heart, biceps and portions of his legs in the freezer for later consumption.
