27-year-old writer, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau and his friend Edward Hoar accidentally set a fire that consumed 300 acres (1.2 km2) of Walden Woods in Fairhaven Bay, Concord, Massachusetts, United States. For years afterward Thoreau could hardly walk the streets of his hometown without hearing the epithet "woods burner." |
