Kelly was shot in the left foot, left leg, right hand, left arm and twice in the region of the groin, although no bullet had penetrated his armour. Several members of the Kelly gang were shot dead, committed suicide or died in the building as Superintendent Sadleir decided to set fire to the hotel with permission from the Chief Secretary.

Planespotter and journalist Levent Salim Bergkotte stabs to death 37-year-old Alastair Whewell, pilot of the Piper Cherokee PA-28 they were flying, and shuts down the engine of the sports plane to make it crash at the age of 33 in Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina. Bergkotte left a farewell letter to his wife in his hotel room.
