In August 1998 Basso was the ringleader of a gang who tortured and beat 59-year-old mentally retarded Louis 'Buddy' Musso to death with baseball bats for his life insurance money. Since Texas no longer served last meal requests on death row at the time, Basso ate regular prison fare of baked chicken, fish, boiled eggs, carrots, green beans, and sliced bread.

68-year-old 7th President of the United States Andrew Jackson aka Old Hickory escapes the first ever assassination attempt on a sitting president when 35-year-old unemployed house painter from England Richard Lawrence his two pistols both misfire in United States Capitol, Washington, District of Columbia, United States. Historians believe the humid weather contributed to the double misfiring. Lawrence was restrained and legend says that Jackson attacked Lawrence with his cane. Others present, including David Crockett, restrained and disarmed Lawrence.
