In August 1998 Basso was the ringleader of a gang who tortured and beat 59-year-old mentally retarded Louis 'Buddy' Musso to death with baseball bats for his life insurance money. Since Texas no longer served last meal requests on death row at the time, Basso ate regular prison fare of baked chicken, fish, boiled eggs, carrots, green beans, and sliced bread.

Over 140 Die in passenger train plunge into a river in Darajani, Makueni, Kenya. The bridge on the main rail line from the Indian Ocean resort of Mombasa to Kisumu had been eroded by the raging flash floods and collapsed under the weight of the train.
