Food was often placed near MacSwiney to persuade him to give up the hunger-strike. Attempts at force-feeding MacSwiney were undertaken in the final days of his strike. On 20 October he fell into a coma. His body lay in St George's Cathedral where 30.000 people filed past it.

31-year-old serial killer Larry Eyler aka The Leather Boy Killer is arrested by Trooper Kenneth Buehrle in Interstate 65, Lowell, Indiana, United States. Earlier that night Eyler picked up Darl Hayward hitchhiking on the Ontario Street ramp to the Kennedy and Dan Ryan Expressways in Chicago with the intention to kill him.
