McVitie's body was never recovered, probably thrown from a boat into the sea at Newhaven, Sussex by the Krays friend and associate Freddie Foreman. Following McVitie's murder, the Krays and several other members of their gang were finally arrested by Scotland Yard who had been watching their exploits for years.

56-year-old murderess Gertrude Baniszewski, originally Gertrude Nadine Van Fossan aka Gertrude Wright is released on parole in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Baniszewski was sentenced to life imprisonment for the sadistic murder of 16-year-old neighbour Sylvia Likens in 1965.
