Chubbuck was doing a live newscast during her Suncoast Digest show and said "In keeping with Channel 40's policy of bringing you the latest in blood and guts, and in living color, you are going to see another first: an attempted suicide" and shot herself behind the left ear. Chubbuck was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead fourteen hours later.

Actress Marilyn Monroe born as Norma Jeane Mortenson commits suicide by acute barbiturate poisoning at the age of 36 in 12305 Fifth Helena Drive, Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, United States. At the subsequent autopsy eight mg/dL of chloral hydrate and 4.5 mg/dL of Nembutal were found in Monroe's system. It was reported that President Kennedy was the last person Monroe called.
