The plane crashed into the bay shortly after the pilot reported "fire on board". A passenger named Zhang Pilin apparently set fire to the passenger cabin with gasoline, causing the loss of control and crash. Zhang had purchased seven air insurance policies worth a total of 1.400.000 renminbi prior to boarding the flight.

Revolutionary thief Mario Roymans aka Tijl van Limburg dies of internal bleeding at the age of 29 in Nerem, Limburg, Belgium. Roymans was found more dead than alive in his car on 26 December 1978 on an abandoned road near Liège.
