Apart from Croce, 24-year-old guitarist Maury Muehleisen, 57-year-old charter pilot Robert N. Elliott, 36-year-old comedian George Stevens, 28-year-old manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortose and 30-year-old road manager Dennis Rast also died. The plane crashed an hour after the end of a concert at Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum.

Composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky dies of cholera at the age of 53 in St. Petersburg, Northwestern Federal District, Russia. While Tchaikovsky's death has traditionally been attributed to cholera, most probably contracted through drinking contaminated water several days earlier from the local river, some have theorized that his death was a suicide.
