Laak emigrated to Canada after World War II and exposed as living as a naturalized Canadian citizen under the name of Alex Laak. Israeli journalist Michael Elkins claimed that Laak was in fact confronted one day after his wife had left their house to go to the movies by a Jewish Avenger squad that clandestinely murdered Nazis. He was confronted with his crimes and their intended punishment and he accepted their offer of being allowed to commit suicide rather than be killed.

World War I veteran Harold B. Wobber commits suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge at the age of 47 in Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California, United States. During a stroll on the walkway Wobber took off his coat and vest, threw them to a passer-by and declared "This is where I get off. I'm going to jump." After his death newspapers reported Wobber was a victim of shell shock and had been under mental health treatment. It was the first suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge, just a little over three months past its opening.
