American Airlines Flight 77 departed from Washington Dulles International Airport at 8:20 a.m. for Los Angeles International Airport with a crew of six and 58 passengers, not including five hijackers. The hijackers crashed into the western side of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. and started a violent fire. All 64 people on board were killed as were 125 Pentagon personnel. The four other hijackers were 26-year-old Khalid al-Mihdhar, 24-year-old Majed Moqed, 25-year-old Nawaf al-Hazmi and 20-year-old Salem al-Hazmi.

Murderer Joseph Timothy Keel is executed by lethal injection at the age of 39 in Raleigh State Prison, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Keel's last meal request was for chicken, a biscuit, rice, a Diet Coke and a T-bone steak without the bone with mushrooms and onions.
