175 years ago There Were a Lot of Speculations

Writer of mystery and the macabre Edgar Allan Poe dies of alcohol poisoning at the age of 40 in Washington Medical College, Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Poe was found on East Lombard Street on 3 October 1849 in great distress. He was never coherent long enough to explain how he came to be in his dire condition and why he was wearing clothes that were not his own. The actual cause of death remains a mystery. Speculation has included delirium tremens, heart disease, epilepsy, syphilis, meningeal inflammation, cholera and rabies.
