Spencer killed 53-year-old principal Burton Wragg and 56-year-old custodian Mike Suchar and wounded 9 children. After firing thirty rounds of ammunition, Spencer barricaded herself inside her home for several hours before surrendering. During the siege she had a telephone conversation with a journalist who reported that she had said "I don't like Mondays".

Painter Paul Eugène Henri Gauguin dies of an overdose of laudanum at the age of 55 in Atuona, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia. Gauguin had been suffering from syphilis for several years involving pain in the legs, heart palpitations, and general debility.
