Mount Vesuvius violently spewed forth a deadly cloud of super-heated tephra and gases to a height of 33 km, ejecting molten rock, pulverized pumice and hot ash at 1.5 million tons per second. The remains of over 1.500 people have so far been found. The total number of fatalities remains unknown.

43-year-old heart patient Arne Larsson receives the first pacemaker implanted by cardiac surgeon Åke Senning in Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset, Stockholm, Södermanland, Sweden. Larsson lived for another forty-three years and during that time went through twenty-six pacemakers. The first device lasted only a few hours.
