Amer was approached by high-ranking Egyptian officers and was given a choice to stand trial for treason, which would inevitably have ended with his conviction and execution, or die an honourable death by taking poison. Amer chose the latter option and received a full military burial.

37-year-old geologist and art vandal László Tóth is released from a psychiatric hospital in Rome, Lazio, Italy. Tóth was immediately deported to Australia and presumably still resides in a nursing home in Strathfield, New South Wales.
