The fire ignited as a result of a faulty liquid propane gas cylinder in a ground floor buffet of the hotel. 17-year-old kitchen helper Khayan Kasien had identified a faulty valve assembly on gas cylinder in a ground-floor buffet, while attempting to shut off the valve, he inadvertently increased the flow of gas and caused an explosion.

Murderer Raymond Dale Rowsey is executed by lethal injection at the age of 33 in Raleigh State Prison, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Rowsey's execution was the 888th carried out in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Rowsey's final meal request was for pizza, chicken wings, two packages of peanut M&M's, and a Pepsi.
