Kallinger was born illigimate to 21-year-old Judith Renner. In December 1937 Kallinger was placed in a foster home after his father had abandoned his mother. On 15 October 1939 he was adopted by Stephen and Anna Kallinger.

Member of the Rote Armee Fraktion Holger Klaus Meins dies after hungerstriking for 58 days at the age of 33 in Justizvollzugsanstalt Wittlich, Wittlich, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. With Meins' 183 cm he only weighed 39 kgs at the time of his death.
