Mount Vesuvius violently spewed forth a deadly cloud of super-heated tephra and gases to a height of 33 km, ejecting molten rock, pulverized pumice and hot ash at 1.5 million tons per second. The remains of over 1.500 people have so far been found. The total number of fatalities remains unknown.

Jane Evelyn King is abducted, raped and strangled by serial killers The Hillside Stranglers at the age of 28 in 703 East Colorado Street, Glendale, California, United States.

King's badly decomposed body was found near the Los Feliz off-ramp of the Golden State Freeway on 23 November.
