Murderer Dennis McGuire is executed by lethal injection at the age of 53 in Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, Lucasville, Ohio, United States.

McGuire made several loud snorting or snoring sounds while straining to catch his breath as he experienced a medical phenomenon known as air hunger. Ohio officials used intravenous doses of two drugs, the sedative midazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone.

Murderess Suzanne Margaret 'Sue' Basso is executed by lethal injection at the age of 60 in Huntsville Prison, 815 12th Street, Huntsville, Texas, United States.

In August 1998 Basso was the ringleader of a gang who tortured and beat 59-year-old mentally retarded Louis 'Buddy' Musso to death with baseball bats for his life insurance money. Since Texas no longer served last meal requests on death row at the time, Basso ate regular prison fare of baked chicken, fish, boiled eggs, carrots, green beans, and sliced bread.

Hakamada was sentenced to death for the stabbing to death of his boss, his boss' wife and two children. A 2008 DNA test suggested the blood on the clothing used as evidence did not match Hakamada's.

Wood was executed with a combination of midazolam and hydromorphone. The execution began at 1:52 p.m. and ended at 3:49 p.m. when Wood was pronounced dead. Wood gasped and snorted for well over an hour, and a media witness compared Wood's breathing to a "fish gulping for air". An Associated Press reporter said Wood gasped more than 600 times.
