The ship was en route from Ziguinchor to Dakar when it ran into a violent storm farther out to sea than it was licensed to sail. The estimated 2000 passengers aboard would have amounted to at least three times the ship's design capacity. The large numbers sleeping on-deck added further instability. Only 64 passengers survived. Thursday 20th of September 1951 (x) — Monkey astronaut Yorick along with 11 mouse crewmates becoms the first animal to survive a flight in an Aerobee rocket. Yorick died 2 hours after landing. Two of the mice also died after recovery. All of the deaths were thought to be related to stress from overheating in the sealed capsule in the New Mexico sun while awaiting the recovery team.
