One bullet grazed the Garfield's shoulder, and the other struck him in the back, passing the first lumbar vertebra but missing the spinal cord before coming to rest behind his pancreas. The wound was not immediately fatal for Garfield but his doctors' uncleaned and unprotected hands are said to have led to infection that caused his death on 19 September. (2 July 1881)
