Monday 10th of August 1896 (-) — Aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal dies of a fracture of the third cervical vertebra and a hemorrhage after falling the day before from a height of about 15 metres while still in his glider. Lilienthal's last words to his brother Gustav were "Opfer müssen gebracht werden!"
