The plane ran off the end of the runway and burst into flames. Two flight attendants seated in the back of the cabin survived the crash and fire. A third flight attendant survived the disaster but later died in hospital.

Friday 11th of August 1978 (x) — Medical photographer Janet Parker is accidently infected by a mislaid sample of the smallpox virus. Parker was placed in quarantaine in the Catherine-de-Barnes Isolation Hospital near Solihull on 20 August and died there on 11 September. Many people had close contact with Parker before she was admitted to hospital, 260 people were being immediately quarantined. Parker became the last person to die of smallpox.
