Special Agent Ingle was working with a private detective to move a package of evidence that possibly related to a federal crime. The private detective had a pistol in his pocket but the pocket apparently had a hole in it and the pistol fell to the ground, firing and fatally striking Ingle. Ingle was the first Special Agent of the FBI to die in the line of duty but in a non-combat situation. (24 November 1931)
