In a five-page letter to his pastor found on the desk in his study List wrote that he saw too much evil in the world, and he had ended the lives of his family members to save their souls. List settled in Denver, Colorado in early 1972 and resumed working as an accountant under the name Robert Peter 'Bob' Clark and remained at large for 18 years.

Monday 7th of December 1987 (-) — Mass murderer David Burke shoots five people including the two pilots aboard British Aerospace 146-200A Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771 before shooting himself.
All 43 passengers and crew aboard the plane died. Burke's main target was his ex-manager Ray Thomson. After boarding the plane Burke wrote a message on an airsickness bag reading: "Hi Ray. I think it's sort of ironical that we end up like this. I asked for some leniency for my family. Remember? Well, I got none and you'll get none."
