Neither airline was originally due to be at the airport but both were diverted from the much bigger Las Palmas airport on nearby Gran Canaria island after a terrorist bomb blast near the departure lounge. 61 people survived. The crash is the deadliest accident in aviation history. (27 March 1977)

Tuesday 2nd of June 1970 (-) — Formula One racer Bruce McLaren crashes while testing his new McLaren M8D. McLaren's Can-Am car crashed on the Lavant Straight just before Woodcote corner. The rear bodywork came adrift at speed making the loss of aerodynamic downforce destabilising the car, which spun, left the track and hit a bunker used as a flag station.
