The flight was hijacked by recently been demoted ranger Le Duc Tan, holding two grenades. Even though the exact cause remains unclear it has been speculated that the hijacker caused the crash by setting off his grenades after the pilots refused to give in to his demands.

Tuesday 5th of April 1983 (x) — Mass murderer Cevdet Yılmaz shoots six people to death for mocking his Dutch naturalisation.
The dead were Ton Smits, Wim van Baarle, Jan van Drongelen, Wim Janssen, Tonie Sneekes and 12-year-old Carmen Sneekes. Four other people were injured.
