The building was destroyed by arson on New Year's Eve, 31 December 1922 - 1 January 1923. Sunday 31st of December 1922 (x) — The Goetheanum, built by Philosopher, social reformer, architect and esotericist Rudolf Steiner is destroyed by arson during the night of New Year's Eve. One suspect was Jakob Ott, a clockmaker and anthroposophist with positions opposite to those of Steiner. He was seen at the crime scene and most likely died in the fire. However a later report in 2007 claimed he was there to help put the fire out. Monday 30th of March 1925 (-) — Philosopher, social reformer, architect and esotericist Rudolf Steiner dies of unknown causes.
