Purdy fired 106 rounds with a Norinco Type 56 AK-47 semi-automatic rifle in three minutes killing five predominantly Southeast Asian refugee schoolchildren and wounding 32 others before turning a Taurus PT92 pistol on himself. The victims were 9-year-old Rathanar Or, 8-year-old Ram Chun, 6-year-old Sokhim An, 8-year-old Oeun Lim and 6-year-old Thuy Tran.

The building was destroyed by arson on New Year's Eve, 31 December 1922 - 1 January 1923.
Sunday 31st of December 1922 (x) — The Goetheanum, built by Philosopher, social reformer, architect and esotericist Rudolf Steiner is destroyed by arson during the night of New Year's Eve
One suspect was Jakob Ott, a clockmaker and anthroposophist with positions opposite to those of Steiner. He was seen at the crime scene and most likely died in the fire. However a later report in 2007 claimed he was there to help put the fire out.
