The driver stopped the train near the summit of the hill to inspect and adjust the braking system and climbed back into the cab. When he started the train the brakes totally failed, causing the train to roll with great velocity straight back down the hill, crashing after passing two stations into a slow moving goods train. Friday 18th of July 1969 (-) — Political campaign specialist for Robert F. Kennedy Mary Jo Kopechne dies in a submerged 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 driven off a narrow unlit bridge without guardrails by Ted Kennedy.. Kennedy extricated himself from the vehicle and survived but Kopechne did not. Kennedy failed to report the incident to the authorities until the car and Kopechne's body were discovered the next morning. A week after the incident Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury and received a two-month suspended sentence.
