Five crewmen successfully ejected or bailed out of the aircraft and landed safely, another ejected but did not survive the landing and two died in the crash. The dead were 35-year-old Sergeant Francis Roger Barnish, 42-year-old Major Eugene Holcombe Richards and 41-year-old Major Eugene Shelton. Bomb disposal expert responsible for disarming the device Jack Revelle claimed "we came damn close" to a nuclear detonation that would have completely changed much of eastern North Carolina.
