Food was often placed near MacSwiney to persuade him to give up the hunger-strike. Attempts at force-feeding MacSwiney were undertaken in the final days of his strike. On 20 October he fell into a coma. His body lay in St George's Cathedral where 30.000 people filed past it. (25 October 1920)

In 1944 Leigh she was diagnosed as having tuberculosis in her left lung and spent several weeks in hospital before appearing to have recovered. The year before she toured through North Africa as part of a revue for the armed forces stationed in the region.
