Starkweather later accused his girlfriend Caril Fugate of performing a coup-de-grace after his shotgun jammed. They were arrested when their stolen car stalled and Starkweather got hit by shattered glass from the windshield as pursuing officers chased him. Converse County Sheriff Earl Heflin said "He thought he was bleeding to death. That's why he stopped. That's the kind of yellow son of a bitch he is."

Sunday 12th of November 1972 (x) — Performance and installation artist Chris Burden performs 'Deadman'.
At 8 p.m. I lay down on La Clenega Boulevard and was covered completely with a canvas tarpaulin. Two fifteen- minute flares were placed near me to alert cars. Just before the flares extinguished, a police car arrived. I was arrested and booked for causing a false emergency to be reported. Trial took place in Beverly Hills. After three days of deliberation, the jury failed to reach to decision, and the judge dismissed the case.
