The church was crowded with approximately 3.000 people to hear Booker T. Washington address the National Convention of Negro Baptists. Someone in the choir yelled "A fight!" Mistaking the word 'fight' for 'fire' the congregation rose en masse and started for the door. Through mere fright many persons fainted and as they fell to the floor were crushed to death.

Thursday 31st of October 1935 (x) — Serial bomber Hugh Rutkowski leaves a bomb on a window ledge.
Although the damage to the building and surrounding houses was severe, the occupants of the police building escaped injury. The same was true less than 11 minutes later when the second bomb went off, this time at the Third Precinct Police Station at Twelfth and West Vine Streets.
