Sunday 28th of August 1955 (-) — Black Emmett Till lynched for offending white 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant in her family's grocery store four days before. Till was abducted and beaten and mutilated before being shot in the head and his body thrown in the Tallahatchie River. Tens of thousands attended Till's funeral or viewed his open casket and images of his mutilated body were published in black-oriented magazines and newspapers. In September 1955 an all-white jury found Carolyn's 24-year-old husband Roy Bryant and his 34-year-old half-brother John William Milam not guilty of Till's kidnapping and murder.
