On 25 March Richard was struck in the left shoulder near the neck by a crossbowman while walking around the unarmed castle of Châlus-Chabrol. He tried to pull the arrow out in the privacy of his tent but failed. A surgeon called a 'butcher' removed it, carelessly mangling the King's arm in the process. (6 April 1199)
