For his last meal, Sigmon requested fried chicken from Kentucky Fried Chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits, cheesecake and sweet tea. Sigmon originally asked for three buckets of the fried chicken and wanted to share them with the other inmates but his request was denied by the prison department. The firing squad fired at 6:05 pm, and Sigmon flexed his arms and heaved in the chair for a few seconds before he fell motionless, and he was pronounced dead at 6:08 pm.

Sunday 21st of January 1968 (x) — A B-52G Stratofortress carrying four B28FI thermonuclear bombs crashes onto sea ice.
The conventional explosives aboard detonated and the nuclear payload ruptured and dispersed which resulted in radioactive contamination. Six crew members ejected safely but 27-year-old co-pilot Leonard Svitenko who did not have an ejection seat was killed while trying to bail out.
