The explosion killed 186 people and injured more than 680 others, and destroyed one-third of the building. The blast destroyed or damaged 324 other buildings within a 16-block radius, shattered glass in 258 nearby buildings, and destroyed or burned 86 cars, causing an estimated 652 million dollars worth of damage. The bomb consisted of about 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) of ammonium nitrate and nitromethane.

Wood attempted to fend off Brudos' attack by biting his thumb until it bled. Brudos beat her unconscious but an oncoming car caused him to flee the scene of the crime.
