Evans was being transported from Rensselaer County to an Albany court. Evans had a handcuff key shoved deep into his sinus cavity and managed to free his hands while in the police van. When they reached the Troy-Menands BridgeEvans suddenly kicked out the side window of the vehicle, jumped out and started running. When police cornered him Evans leaped off the bridge and plunged to his death into the shallows of the Hudson River over 60 feet below. (14 August 1998)
