Tuesday 15th of November 1988 (x) — Eight people are killed and 16 injured in a racially motivated shooting spree by Spree killer Barend Strydom .
Strydom was sentenced to death but the South African government declared a moratorium on capital punishment in 1990. He was released in 1992. The square has since been renamed Lilian Ngoyi Square.
