Cuevas and two other inmates of Huntsville's Walls Unit sparked the nation's longest prison siege by taking 16 hostages on 24 July 24 1974. Accomplices Fred Gomez Carrasco and Rudolfo Dominguez along with hostages Julia Standley and Elizabeth Beseda were killed during a shootout 10 days later. (23 May 1991)

Wednesday 21st of July 1976 (x) — Double murderer Gary Gilmore is arrested. Gilmore's cousin Brenda turned him in to police shortly after he phoned her asking for bandages and painkillers for the injury to his hand. The day before, while disposing of the .22 caliber pistol he used in his murders, Gilmore accidentally shot himself in his right hand.
