Mengele was buried in Embu das Artes under the name Wolfgang Gerhard, whose identification card he had been using since 1971. The remains were exhumed on 6 June 1985 and extensive forensic examination confirmed with a high degree of probability that the body was Mengele's. (7 February 1979)

Wednesday 11th of July 1973 (x) — Problems began when a fire started in a rear lavatory. Prior to the forced landing many of the passengers had already died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation. A possible cause of the fire was that the lavatory waste bin contents caught fire after a lit cigarette was thrown into it. There were 11 survivors.
