Kappler was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His wife and qualified nurse Anneliese carried him out in a large suitcase (he weighed about 47 kg at the time) and drove him straight to Germany in a red Fiat automobile. Six months after his escape Kappler died at home.

Monday 11th of September 1978 (-) — Medical photographer Janet Parker dies of smallpox.
Parker was accidently infected by a mislaid sample of the virus at the University of Birmingham Medical School. She fell ill on 11 August and was placed in quarantaine on 20 August. Parker became the last person to die of smallpox.
