Kemmler was sentenced to death and became the first man to be executed by use of the electric chair, a device invented in 1881 by Buffalo dentist Alfred Southwick which, after nine years of development and legislation, was ready for use. (29 March 1889)

Adorno was convinced that recent attacks by students were directed against his theories as well as his person and he feared that the current political situation may lead to totalitarianism.
