The fire was triggered by a miner who accidentally started a conveyor belt and did not notice it. The conveyor belt was working idle and eventually due to friction the rubber band of it caught fire.

Thursday 8th of August 1985 (x) — Member of the Rote Armee Fraktion Birgit Hogefeld lures 20-year-old US-Soldier Edward Pimental from a nightclub to obtain his ID-Card.
Pimental was shot dead by Hogefeld and Eva Haule. Pimental's ID-Card was used to gain access to the Rhein-Main Air Base and place a car bomb.
