The explosion killed 186 people and injured more than 680 others, and destroyed one-third of the building. The blast destroyed or damaged 324 other buildings within a 16-block radius, shattered glass in 258 nearby buildings, and destroyed or burned 86 cars, causing an estimated 652 million dollars worth of damage. The bomb consisted of about 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) of ammonium nitrate and nitromethane. (19 April 1995)

Friday 19th of October 1984 (-) — Catholic priest and martyr Jerzy Popiełuszko is beaten to death by Security Police officers Captain Grzegorz Piotrowski, Leszek Pękala and Waldemar Chmielewski. Popiełuszko's body was found 10 days later in the Vistula Water Reservoir. Popiełuszko has been recognized as a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church and was beatified on 6 June 2010 by Archbishop Angelo Amato on behalf of Pope Benedictus XVI.
