Vom Rath died two days later in hospital. Grynszpan was theorized to have been acquainted with vom Rath before the shooting. According to this theory vom Rath was homosexual and had met Grynszpan in the Paris bar Le Boeuf sur le Toit. Vom Rath had supposedly promised to use his influence to legalize Grynszpan's French residency. When vom Rath reneged on his promise Grynszpan went to the embassy and shot him.
